Pre-treatment of organic waste streams for insect farming

For an innovative application within the insect farming industry, Smicon has supplied a plant for the preparation of organic waste streams as a substrate for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae.

BSF larvae are known for their ability to efficiently convert large quantities of organic material into high-quality proteins and fats for animal feed. The quality and composition of the substrate provided play a crucial role in this process. To enable optimal uptake by the larvae, organic waste streams must be reduced to a homogeneous and easily digestible mass.

The Smicon plant reduces and conditions various organic waste streams, including vegetable, fruit and other food waste streams. By processing the material to a consistent particle size, a substrate is created that is suitable for efficient and controlled larval rearing.

A key advantage of the plant is its flexibility in processing a wide range of substrate compositions. Both solid and more liquid organic waste streams can be processed, enabling operators to adapt to fluctuating raw material availability.

This project highlights the growing role of insect farming within the circular economy. By repurposing organic waste streams as a raw material for sustainable protein production, it highlights the growing role of insect farming within the circular economy. By repurposing organic waste streams as a raw material for sustainable protein production, value is created from materials that would otherwise be lost.
